Engineering YES is training competition for postgraduate students and post-doctoral researchers, providing them a commercial platform to present their realistic ideas for a fictitious start-up company. The programme involves an intensive three-day roller-costar ride of the business world and an opportunity to interact with investors and industry experts.
Miss Nishtha Chopra, a PhD student supervised by Dr Akram Alomainy of the Antennas and Electromagnetics Research Group at the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, was one of the participants of this programme. Her team, called “ChargeWay”, was comprised of five researchers from different backgrounds; together, they proposed the idea of contactless charging of vehicles to reduce CO2 emissions. By the end of the competition, her team bagged the title of “Best Team Work” and a cash prize of £250. In her own words, “My experience with Engineering YES was worthwhile and now I feel it is useful to be aware of the technology market to understand the nitty-gritties of business start-ups”.
