Abstract

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating condition which results in the loss of motor functions in various parts of the body. Secondary complication may also occur afterwards due to the lack of regular exercise. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) has been proved a useful method to restore lost neural functions, assisting rehabilitation and improving quality of life for SCI patients. Thanks to fast advances in micro-fabrication, silicon process and sensor technology, it is possible to design miniaturized biomedical devices, paving its way from external devices or semi-implants to fully implanted devices for FES applications. This talk will highlight the challenges faced by the implant design community and present our engineering effort towards a fully-integrated implantable neural stimulator using integrated circuits.
